RESUMO

Protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist II (PIVKA-II) plays a critical role in the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), however, studies on its efficacy in diagnosing recurrent HCC were rarely found. A multicenter, retrospective, and observational study was conducted. During the overall follow-up of 5 years, HCC patients who had curative resection were monitored every 3 months in the first year post-surgery and every 6 months thereafter if no recurrence occurred. Tumor markers were collected at the diagnosis of recurrence for those with recurrence and at the last follow-up for those without recurrence. The median serum levels of PIVKA-II and AFP in the recurrence group were significantly higher than those in the non-recurrence group (PIVKA-II: 84.62 vs. 18.76 mAU/ml, p < 0.001; AFP: 4.90 vs. 3.00 ng/ml, p < 0.001) and there is a significant correlation between PIVKA-II and AFP (R = 0.901, p < 0.001). PIVKA-II showed better accuracy than AFP in the diagnosis of overall recurrent HCC (AUC: 0.883 vs. 0.672; p < 0.0001), but also in patients with negative PIVKA-II before curative resection (AUC: 0.878 vs. 0.680, p = 0.001). Clinician should pay more attention to serum PIVKA-II values when following patients after curative HCC resection to detect early recurrence.Clinical trial registration: ChiCTR2300070874.

BACKGROUND: Internal and external fixation are common surgical procedures for treating fractures. However, the impact of different surgical approaches (including internal and external fixations) on patients' psychological status and Quality of Life (QoL) is rarely examined. Herein, we aimed to investigate the effects of internal and external fixation on anxiety, depression, insomnia, and overall mental and physical health in Distal Radius Fractures (DRF) patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study on 96 fracture patients who underwent internal fixation (57 patients) or external fixation (39 patients). The Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), and the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire were used to assess the patients' pain, anxiety, depression, sleep, and QoL before surgery and at seven days, one month, and three months post-surgery. RESULTS: The VAS scores were significantly lower in the Internal Fixation Group (IFG) than in the External Fixation Group (EFG) on the seventh day and one month postoperatively (P < 0.05). Although both groups showed no significant anxiety, depression, or insomnia before surgery (P > 0.05), the EFG showed significantly higher HADS-A, HADS-D, and AIS scores than the IFG at seven days and one and three months postoperatively (P < 0.05). Additionally, changes in HADS-A, HADS-D, and AIS scores were most significant at day seven post-surgery in the EFG (P < 0.05). Furthermore, no significant difference was found between the two groups in the average Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores before surgery (P > 0.05). However, both groups showed positive changes in PCS and MCS scores at postoperative day seven and one and three months postoperatively, with the IFG having significantly higher average PCS and MCS scores compared to the EFG (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Compared to external fixation, internal fixation did not significantly impact patients' emotions regarding anxiety and depression in the early postoperative period, and physical and mental health recovery was better during the postoperative rehabilitation period. Furthermore, when there are no absolute indications, the impact on patients' psychological well-being should be considered as one of the key factors in the treatment plan during surgical approach selection.

Estimating river flood risks under climate change is challenging, largely due to the interacting and combined influences of various flood-generating drivers. However, a more detailed quantitative analysis of such compounding effects and the implications of their interplay remains underexplored on a large scale. Here, we use explainable machine learning to disentangle compounding effects between drivers and quantify their importance for different flood magnitudes across thousands of catchments worldwide. Our findings demonstrate the ubiquity of compounding effects in many floods. Their importance often increases with flood magnitude, but the strength of this increase varies on the basis of catchment conditions. Traditional flood analysis might underestimate extreme flood hazards in catchments where the contribution of compounding effects strongly varies with flood magnitude. Overall, our study highlights the need to carefully incorporate compounding effects in flood risk assessment to improve estimates of extreme floods.

BACKGROUND: During unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) spraying, downwash and crosswind generate back pressure in comprehensive, which changes in spatial atomization characteristics of spraying droplets. However, the process of such atomization characteristics needs to be clarified. This study focuses on the effect of rotor speed and crosswind speed on spatial atomization characteristics. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of the distributions of airflow, back pressure and atomization characteristics were established, and verification was conducted by developing a validation platform. RESULTS: The CFD results indicated that small droplets of 65-130 µm atomized by negative pressure would be coalesced near the nozzle, while large droplets of 390-520 µm atomized by positive pressure would be aggregated further away. Crosswind caused atomization stratification with droplet sizes of approximately 90 µm, 320 µm and 390 µm. When crosswind speed increased from 3 m/s to 6 m/s, the spraying drifted from 0.5 m to 1 m. When rotor speed increased from 2000 RPM to 3000 RPM, droplet distribution was expanded and droplet particle size was more uniform. Verification results demonstrated that the spraying distribution and the droplet size variation were consistent with the CFD. CONCLUSIONS: Spatial atomization characteristics were highly correlated with airflow and back pressure. Moreover, as crosswind generated droplet drift and atomization stratification and downwash could improve the uniformity of droplet distribution, spraying performance was superior by enhancing downwash to restrain the adverse effect of crosswind in real applications. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Planar gliding along with anisotropic lattice strain of single-crystalline nickel-rich cathodes (SCNRC) at highly delithiated states will induce severe delamination cracking that seriously deteriorates LIBs' cyclability. To address these issues, a novel lattice-matched MgTiO3 (MTO) layer, which exhibits same lattice structure as Ni-rich cathodes, is rationally constructed on single-crystalline LiNi0.9 Co0.05 Mn0.05 O2 (SC90) for ultrastable mechanical integrity. Intensive in/ex situ characterizations combined with theoretical calculations and finite element analysis suggest that the uniform MTO coating layer prevents direct contact between SC90 and organic electrolytes and enables rapid Li-ion diffusion with depressed Li-deficiency, thereby stabilizing the interfacial structure and accommodating the mechanical stress of SC90. More importantly, a superstructure is simultaneously formed in SC90, which can effectively alleviate the anisotropic lattice changes and decrease cation mobility during successive high-voltage de/intercalation processes. Therefore, the as-acquired MTO-modified SC90 cathode displays desirable capacity retention and high-voltage stability. When paired with commercial graphite anodes, the pouch-type cells with the MTO-modified SC90 can deliver a high capacity of 175.2 mAh g-1 with 89.8% capacity retention after 500 cycles. This lattice-matching coating strategy demonstrate a highly effective pathway to maintain the structural and interfacial stability in electrode materials, which can be a pioneering breakthrough in commercialization of Ni-rich cathodes.

BACKGROUND: The risks associated with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) have gained significant recognition over time. A prevalent form of distal DVT is isolated calf muscular venous thrombosis (ICMVT). Despite its common clinical occurrence, data on ICMVT subsequent to tibial plateau fracture (TPF) surgery are scarce. This study aimed to examine the epidemiological characteristics and associated risk factors (RFs) of ICMVT following TPF surgery. METHODS: For this retrospective analysis, we included patients from our hospital, who underwent TPF surgery between March 2017 and March 2021. Patients' electronic medical records were reviewed, including admission details, fracture classification, surgical procedures, and laboratory biomarkers. The HSS (The American Hospital for Special Surgery) and Rasmussen scores were employed to evaluate the clinical effect. A Color Duplex Flow Imager (CDFI) was regularly used to detect pre- and postoperative venous thrombosis in the lower limbs. Finally, uni- and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify independent RFs associated with ICMVT. RESULTS: Overall, 481 participants were recruited for analysis. Postoperative ICMVT occurred in 47 patients. All ICMVTs occurred on the affected side. Four of the 47 ICMVT patients exhibited sudden postoperative swelling in the affected limb. The HSS and Rasmussen scores in the non-ICMVT cohort (87.6 ± 8.2, 16.0 ± 1.7) were markedly different from the ICMVT cohort (84.8 ± 8.2, 15.5 ± 1.6) (p = 0.014, p = 0.031). This study finally identified five postoperative ICMVT-related RFs, which were age (> 55 years old) (OR 3.06; 95% CI 1.47-6.37; p = 0.003), gender (female) (OR 2.67; 95% CI 1.37-5.22; p = 0.004), surgical duration (> 114 min) (OR 3.14; 95% CI 1.44-6.85; p = 0.004), elevated white blood cell content (OR 2.85; 95% CI 1.47-5.51; p = 0.002), and hyponatremia (OR 2.31; 95% CI 1.04-5.12; p = 0.040). CONCLUSION: The epidemiological findings of this study may help predict ICMVT risk after surgery thus facilitating the development of individualized clinical assessments and targeted prevention programs.

Machine learning models can improve antibiotic removal performance in constructed wetlands (CWs) by optimizing the operation process. However, robust modeling approaches for revealing the complex biochemical treatment process of antibiotics in CWs are still lacking. In this study, two automated machine learning (AutoML) models achieved good performance with different sizes of the training dataset (mean absolute error = 9.94-13.68, coefficient of determination = 0.780-0.877), demonstrating the ability to predict antibiotic removal performance without human intervention. Explainable analysis results (the variable importance and Shapley additive explanations) revealed that the variable substrate type was more influential than the variables of influent wastewater quality and plant type. This study proposed a potential approach to comprehensively understanding the complex effects of key operational variables on antibiotic removal, which serve as a reference for optimizing operational adjustments in the CW process.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common bacteria that may cause a wide range of severe illnesses in humans. One of the nonantibiotic therapies, antivirulence factor therapy, has attracted ongoing interest. Screening for and investigating bacterial virulence factor inhibitors is critical for the development of antivirulence factor treatments. Pyocyanin is P. aeruginosa's distinctive pigment, and it plays a key role in infection. The impact of low concentration ethanol on pyocyanin production was investigated in this research. Pyocyanin production was found both subjectively and quantitatively. The effects of ethanol on the expression of pyocyanin production genes were studied using qRT-PCR and western blotting. The findings demonstrated that low concentrations of ethanol (as little as 0.1%) greatly suppressed pyocyanin production without affecting P. aeruginosa growth. The degree of inhibition increased as the ethanol contentration rose. Ethanol inhibits the expression of genes involved in pyocyanin production. This inhibitory impact was mostly seen at the protein level. Further research revealed that ethanol increased the expression of the post-transcriptional regulator RsmA, which inhibits pyocyanin production. Given the favorable relationship between pyocyanin production and antibiotic resistance, the impact of low concentration ethanol on various antibiotics was investigated. Ethanol lowered antibiotic resistance in P. aeruginosa, presumably by inhibiting pyocyanin.

RESUMO

The mechanical properties of de-lithiated single-crystal Ni-rich cathodes are causing extensive concern. Here, we first show that the compression hardness of single crystal Ni-rich cathode particles decreases significantly at highly de-lithiated states by micro-compression testing. Thus, phase-boundary hardening was introduced to inhibit the planar gliding, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance.

OBJECTIVES: The lipase gene lipSR1 isolated from oil-contaminated soil exhibits high hydrolytic activity for short-chain fatty acid substrates. A single calcium ion is required to anchor the lid of LipSR1 in an open conformation by coordination with two aspartate residues and three other residues in the lid. The lid of LipSR1 is anchored by Ca2+, which is coordinated by side-chain carboxyl oxygens of Asp153 and Asp157, carbonyl oxygens of Thr118 and Ser144, and the side chain of Gln120. RESULTS: D157A, D153R, Q120A, S144A, and T118A mutants were produced by site-directed mutagenesis in this study. Analyses of hydrolytic activity and thermostability showed that the properties of D157A, D153R, Q120A, and S144A were almost lost, suggesting that Asp157, Asp153, Gln120, and Ser144 are important residues for LipSR1. However, the catalytic performance of T118A was clearly maintained. Moreover, the thermostability of mutant T118A was higher than that of wild-type LipSR1. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicated that mutation of threonine at position 118 improved the stability of the enzyme at high temperature.

Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), is one of the most widely used additive manufacturing technologies today, which has been used for a variety of applications. Due to the layer-by-layer manufacturing process, FFF parts are inferior to those fabricated by traditional methods in terms of tensile properties, which is one of the most significant defects that hinder the development of this technique. In this study, a vibration was utilized during the FFF process by piezoelectric ceramics electric plates to improve the mechanical properties of the built parts and surface quality of PLA FFF parts. Subsequently, an investigation of the tensile and the surface quality of PLA FFF specimens built-in X and Z-direction fabricated individually without and with vibrations utilized has been done. Furthermore, a theoretical model has been established to predict the tensile strength and plasticity of FFF parts fabricated without and with vibrations utilized based on classical laminated plate theory, with the anisotropic and laminated characteristics taken into consideration. Young's modulus model has been established based on the laminated plate theory and flexural vibration theoretical approaches of a plate for the PLA FFF parts manufactured without and with vibrations utilized respectively. Compared with the previous models this model provides the tensile strength and plasticity of FFF parts both manufactured without and with vibrations utilized. The results indicate that the predicted tensile strength and plasticity of the PLA FFF parts manufactured with vibrations utilized have a good consistency with the experimental ones, meanwhile, vibration utilization can significantly improve the surface quality of the PLA FFF samples manufactured in the Z-direction, and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed that vibration utilization can improve the forming quality of FFF manufactured parts.

G3LEA is a family of proteins that exhibit chaperone-like activity when under distinct stress. In previous research, DosH was identified as a G3LEA protein from model extremophile-Deinococcus radiodurans R1 with a crucial core HD domain consisting of eight 11-mer motifs. However, the roles of motifs participating in the process of resistance to stress and their underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, eight different proteins with tandem repeats of the same motif were synthesized, named Motif1-8, respectively, whose function and structure were discussed. In this way, the role of each motif in the HD domain can be comprehensively analyzed, which can help in finding possibly crucial amino acid sites. Circular dichroism results showed that all proteins were intrinsically ordered in phosphate buffer, and changed into more α-helical ordered structures with the addition of trifluoroethanol and glycerol. Transformants expressing artificial proteins had significantly higher stress resistance to oxidation, desiccation, salinity and freezing compared with the control group; E. coli with Motif1 and Motif8 had more outstanding performance in particular. Moreover, enzymes and membrane protein protection viability suggested that Motif1 and Motif8 had more positive influences on various molecules, demonstrating a protective role in a chaperone-like manner. Based on these results, the artificial proteins synthesized according to the rule of 11-mer motifs have a similar function to wildtype protein. Regarding the sequence in all motifs, there are more amino acids to produce H bonds and α-helices, and more amino acids to promote interaction between proteins in Motif1 and Motif8; in addition, considering linkers, there are possibly more amino acids forming α-helix and binding substrates in these two proteins, which potentially provides some ideas for us to design potential ideal stress-response elements for synthetic biology. Therefore, the amino acid composition of the 11-mer motif and linker is likely responsible for its biological function.

Nutritional markers for adverse clinical outcomes following total joint arthroplasty (TJA) remain controversial. This study attempted to explore the validity of the albumin-to-fibrinogen ratio (AFR) in nutritional assessment and assess its predictive value for adverse postoperative outcomes in patients receiving TJA. 2137 patients who underwent primary TJA between January 2016 and June 2021 were screened. We performed receiver operating characteristic curves and area under the curve (AUC) to assess predictive value and establish optimal thresholds. Multivariate regression models were then used to assess potential associations between AFR and adverse postoperative outcomes. AFR might predict postoperative deep surgical site infections (AUC = 0.699, P = .023). The optimal threshold for wound complications, determined by the Youden index, was 12.96. Compared with patients with reduced AFR, patients with high AFR exhibited an enhanced risk of adverse postoperative outcomes (adjusted OR: 4.010-8.832, all P < .05). Using multivariate Cox regression analysis, we further confirmed a higher risk of adverse postoperative outcomes in patients with low AFR (adjusted HR: 3.733-7.335, all P < .05). Reduced preoperative AFR markedly enhanced adverse postoperative outcomes. Hence, AFR may serve as a potential biomarker for nutritional assessment, and may predict postoperative wound complications following primary TJA.

Waste oil pollution and the treatment of oily waste present a challenge, and the exploitation of microbial resources is a safe and efficient method to resolve these problems. Lipase-producing microorganisms can directly degrade waste oil and promote the degradation of oily waste and, therefore, have very significant research and application value. The isolation of efficient oil-degrading strains is of great practical significance in research into microbial remediation in oil-contaminated environments and for the enrichment of the microbial lipase resource library. In this study, Acinetobacter junii WCO-9, an efficient oil-degrading bacterium, was isolated from an oil-contaminated soil using olive oil as the sole carbon source, and its enzyme activity of ρ-nitrophenyl decanoate (ρ-NPD) decomposition was 3000 U/L. The WCO-9 strain could degrade a variety of edible oils, and its degradation capability was significantly better than that of the control strain, A junii ATCC 17908. Comparative pan-genome and lipid degradation pathway analyses indicated that A. junii isolated from the same environment shared a similar set of core genes and that the species accumulated more specific genes that facilitated resistance to environmental stresses under different environmental conditions. WCO-9 has accumulated a complete set of oil metabolism genes under a long-term oil-contamination environment, and the compact arrangement of abundant lipase and lipase chaperones has further strengthened the ability of the strain to survive in such environments. This is the main reason why WCO-9 is able to degrade oil significantly more effectively than ATCC 17908. In addition, WCO-9 possesses a specific lipase that is not found in homologous strains. In summary, A. junii WCO-9, with a complete triglyceride degradation pathway and the specific lipase gene, has great potential in environmental remediation and lipase for industry.

Deinococcus radiodurans is a microorganism that can adjust, survive or thrive in hostile conditions and has been described as "the strongest microorganism in the world". The underlying mechanism behind the exceptional resistance of this robust bacterium still remains unclear. Osmotic stress, caused by abiotic stresses such as desiccation, salt stress, high temperatures and freezing, is one of the main stresses suffered by microorganisms, and it is also the basic response pathway by which organisms cope with environmental stress. In this study, a unique trehalose synthesis-related gene, dogH (Deinococcus radiodurans orphan glycosyl hydrolase-like family 10), which encodes a novel glycoside hydrolase, was excavated using a multi-omics combination method. The content accumulation of trehalose and its precursors under hypertonic conditions was quantified by HPLC-MS. Ours results showed that the dogH gene was strongly induced by sorbitol and desiccation stress in D. radiodurans. DogH glycoside hydrolase hydrolyzes α-1,4-glycosidic bonds by releasing maltose from starch in the regulation of soluble sugars, thereby increasing the concentration of TreS (trehalose synthase) pathway precursors and trehalose biomass. The maltose and alginate content in D. radiodurans amounted to 48 µg mg protein-1 and 45 µg mg protein-1, respectively, which were 9 and 28 times higher than those in E. coli, respectively. The accumulation of greater intracellular concentrations of osmoprotectants may be the true reason for the higher osmotic stress tolerance of D. radiodurans.

The genus Geobacillus comprises thermophilic gram-positive bacteria which are widely distributed, and their ability to withstand high temperatures makes them suitable for various applications in biotechnology and industrial production. Geobacillus stearothermophilus H6 is an extremely thermophilic Geobacillus strain isolated from hyperthermophilic compost at 80 °C. Through whole-genome sequencing and genome annotation analysis of the strain, the gene functions of G. stearothermophilus H6 were predicted and the thermophilic enzyme in the strain was mined. The G. stearothermophilus H6 draft genome consisted of 3,054,993 bp, with a genome GC content of 51.66%, and it was predicted to contain 3750 coding genes. The analysis showed that strain H6 contained a variety of enzyme-coding genes, including protease, glycoside hydrolase, xylanase, amylase and lipase genes. A skimmed milk plate experiment showed that G. stearothermophilus H6 could produce extracellular protease that functioned at 60 °C, and the genome predictions included 18 secreted proteases with signal peptides. By analyzing the sequence of the strain genome, a protease gene gs-sp1 was successfully screened. The gene sequence was analyzed and heterologously expressed, and the protease was successfully expressed in Escherichia coli. These results could provide a theoretical basis for the development and application of industrial strains.

BACKGROUND: The high recurrence rate of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after hepatectomy usually results in poor prognosis. To the best of our knowledge, no study has reported the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) plus targeted therapies on preventing HCC recurrence after hepatectomy. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the benefits and safety of applying adjuvant ICIs plus targeted therapies after hepatectomy for patients at high risk of HCC recurrence. METHODS: A total of 196 patients with any risk factors for recurrence who underwent hepatectomy for HCC were reviewed in this retrospective study. RESULTS: Compared with the control group (n = 158), ICIs plus targeted therapies (n = 38) had a significantly higher recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate in univariate analysis (HR, 0.46; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.24-0.90; p = 0.020), multivariate analysis (adjusted HR, 0.62; 95%CI, 0.49-0.79; p < 0.001) and propensity score-matched analysis (HR, 0.35; 95%CI, 0.16-0.75; p = 0.005). Subgroup analyses also showed that postoperative adjuvant ICIs plus targeted therapies might reduce HCC recurrence in patients with the most of risk factors. CONCLUSION: Postoperative adjuvant ICI plus targeted therapies may reduces early HCC recurrence in patients with a high risk of recurrence, and the treatments are well tolerated.

The single-crystalline Ni-rich cathode has aroused much attention for extenuating the cycling and safety crises in comparison to the polycrystalline cathode. However, planar gliding and kinetic hindrance hinder its chemo-mechanical properties with cycling, which induce delamination cracking and damage the mechanical integrity in single crystals. Herein, a robust Li2.64(Sc0.9Ti0.1)2(PO4)3 (LSTP) ion/electron conductive network was constructed to decorate single-crystal LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 (SC90) particles. Via physicochemical characterizations and theoretical calculations, this LSTP coating that evenly grows on the SC90 particle with good lattice matching and strong bonding effectively restricts the anisotropic lattice collapse along the c-axis and the cation mixing activity of SC90, thus suppressing planar gliding and delamination cracking during repeated high-voltage lithiation/delithiation processes. Moreover, such a 3D LSTP network can also facilitate the lithium-ion transport and prevent the electrolyte's corrosion, lightening the kinetic hindrance and triggering the surface phase transformation. Combined with the Li metal anode, the LSTP-modified SC90 cell exhibits a desirable capacity retention of 90.5% at 5 C after 300 cycles and stabilizes the operation at 4.3/4.5 V. Our results provide surface modification engineering to mitigate planar gliding and kinetic hindrance of the single-crystalline ultra-high Ni-rich cathode, which inspires peers to design other layered cathode materials.

BACKGROUND: Microvascular invasion (MVI) is an adverse factor for the prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We aimed to construct a preoperative prediction model for MVI, thereby providing a reference for clinicians in formulating treatment options for HCC. METHODS: A total of 360 patients with non-metastatic HCC were retrospectively enrolled. We used logistic regression analysis to screen out independent risk factors for MVI and further constructed a predictive model for MVI. The performance of the model was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA). RESULTS: Logistic regression analysis revealed that fibrinogen (>4 g/L) (OR: 6.529), alpha-fetoprotein (≥ 400 ng/mL) (OR: 2.676), cirrhosis (OR: 2.25), tumor size (OR: 1.239), and poor tumor border (OR: 3.126) were independent risk factors of MVI. The prediction model of MVI had C-index of 0.746 and 0.772 in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The calibration curves showed good agreement between actual and predicted MVI risk. Finally, DCA reveals that this model has good clinical utility. CONCLUSION: The nomogram-based model we established can predict the preoperative MVI well and provides reference for surgeons to make clinical treatment decisions.

BACKGROUND: Ocular adnexal lymphoma (OAL) and idiopathic orbital inflammation (IOI) are malignant and benign lesions for which radiotherapy and corticosteroids are indicated, but similar clinical manifestations make their differentiation difficult. PURPOSE: To develop and validate an MRI-based radiomics nomogram for individual diagnosis of OAL vs. IOI. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: A total of 103 patients (46.6% female) with mean age of 56.4 ± 16.3 years having OAL (n = 58) or IOI (n = 45) were divided into an independent training (n = 82) and a testing dataset (n = 21). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: A 3-T, precontrast T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), and postcontrast T1WI (T1 + C). ASSESSMENT: Radiomics features were extracted and selected from segmented tumors and peritumoral regions in MRI before-and-after filtering. These features, alone or combined with clinical characteristics, were used to construct a radiomics or joint signature to differentiate OAL from IOI, respectively. A joint nomogram was built to show the impact of the radiomics signature and clinical characteristics on individual risk of developing OAL. STATISTICAL TESTS: Area under the curve (AUC) and accuracy (ACC) were used for performance evaluation. Mann-Whitney U and Chi-square tests were used to analyze continuous and categorical variables. Decision curve analysis, kappa statistics, DeLong and Hosmer-Lemeshow tests were also conducted. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The joint signature achieved an AUC of 0.833 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.806-0.870), slightly better than the radiomics signature with an AUC of 0.806 (95% CI: 0.767-0.838) (P = 0.778). The joint and radiomics signatures were comparable to experienced radiologists referencing to clinical characteristics (ACC = 0.810 vs. 0.796-0.806, P > 0.05) or not (AUC = 0.806 vs. 0.753-0.791, P > 0.05), respectively. The joint nomogram gained more net benefits than the radiomics nomogram, despite both showing good calibration and discriminatory efficiency (P > 0.05). DATA CONCLUSION: The developed radiomics-based analysis might help to improve the diagnostic performance and reveal the association between radiomics features and individual risk of developing OAL.
